B1 Preliminary (PET) Writing – Practice Test 1 — Part 1 – Write an email

Question 1. Read this email from your English-speaking friend Daniel and the notes you have made. Write your reply using ALL four notes. Write about 100 words.

The task

From: Daniel
Subject: Visiting you next month!

Hi,

Great news — I'm coming to your city for a few days next month! [Note: Say how you feel.]

I've never been before, so what's the one place you think I really shouldn't miss? [Note: Recommend a place.]

Also, I'm not sure whether to come by train or by plane. Which would you choose? [Note: Say which and why.]

Let me know if there's anything I should bring. [Note: Ask Daniel a question.]

See you soon,
Daniel

Model answer (about 100 words)

Hi Daniel,

I'm so happy that you're finally coming to visit me next month — I can't wait to show you around!

The one place you really shouldn't miss is the old harbour. It's beautiful in the evening, and there are lots of small cafés where we can sit and talk.

If I were you, I'd come by train. It's cheaper than flying and you can enjoy the views on the way.

By the way, could you bring some photos from our trip last summer? I'd love to see them again.

See you soon,
(your name)
