Why We Sleep
Sleep can look like a quiet period when nothing important is happening. In reality, the brain and body remain busy throughout the night. Sleep is not simply a switch between being awake and unconscious. It consists of several stages that repeat in cycles, and each stage supports the body in a different way.
During non-REM sleep, the body gradually moves from light sleep into deeper sleep. Heart rate and breathing slow, muscles relax and it becomes more difficult to wake up. Deep sleep is especially important for physical recovery. Later in a cycle, REM sleep becomes more common. This is the stage in which vivid dreams often occur, although dreaming is possible at other times too.
The order of these stages matters. A person who sleeps for eight hours does not remain in one state for the whole night. Instead, the brain moves through repeated cycles, with the balance changing towards more REM sleep in the early morning. This helps explain why sleeping for only the first half of the night is not equal to getting a complete night's rest.
One major purpose of sleep is to support learning and memory. While we are awake, the brain receives a huge amount of information. During sleep, it appears to strengthen useful connections and organise some of what has been learned. Students sometimes stay awake late to study for an exam, but losing sleep can make it harder to pay attention and remember information the following day.
Sleep also supports physical health and everyday safety. Tired people usually react more slowly and make more mistakes. The danger is not limited to falling asleep completely. A driver may keep their eyes open but fail to notice a changing traffic light or another vehicle quickly enough. Similar problems can affect people working with machinery or making important decisions.
Our sleep schedule is guided partly by an internal body clock, known as the circadian rhythm. This clock responds strongly to light. Bright light in the morning helps tell the brain that the day has begun, while darkness supports the natural preparation for sleep. Strong light from room lamps and screens late at night can delay that signal, although sensitivity differs from person to person.
Another process builds sleep pressure during the day. The longer we remain awake, the stronger this pressure usually becomes. Caffeine can temporarily block the feeling of sleepiness, but it does not remove the body's need for sleep. Because caffeine can remain active for hours, an afternoon coffee may still affect somebody at bedtime even if they no longer feel energetic.
Many people sleep less during the working week and try to recover by staying in bed much longer at the weekend. Extra sleep may reduce some tiredness, but it cannot always cancel every effect of an irregular schedule. A very late weekend bedtime can also move the body clock, making Sunday night and Monday morning more difficult.
There is no single perfect schedule for everybody. Sleep needs change with age, and work, health and family responsibilities affect what is possible. However, most adults are advised to get at least seven hours regularly. Sleep quality matters as well as total time: repeatedly waking during the night may leave someone tired even after spending many hours in bed.
Useful habits are usually simple rather than dramatic. Going to bed and getting up at similar times, keeping the bedroom dark and quiet, being physically active during the day and avoiding late caffeine can all help. Constantly checking a sleep tracker may create anxiety, so numbers from a watch should be treated as estimates rather than a medical diagnosis.
An occasional poor night is normal. Persistent difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep or remaining awake during the day is different and may deserve professional advice. Sleep is not wasted time taken away from a productive life. It is one of the processes that allows attention, memory, health and performance to continue when morning arrives.
