The purpose of this report is to evaluate the city museum’s volunteer programme, explain why a number of volunteers leave within six months and recommend measures to improve retention. The findings are based on interviews with 32 current and former volunteers.

New volunteers receive a useful half-day introduction and are paired with an experienced guide for their first two shifts. Nevertheless, ongoing training is limited, and over half of those interviewed felt unprepared to answer detailed visitor questions. Weekend volunteers also reported that supervisory support was not always available.

The most significant factor appears to be uncertainty about duties. Volunteers are frequently moved between the information desk, exhibitions and family activities with little notice. Furthermore, several respondents stated that their contribution was rarely acknowledged. This has led some highly experienced volunteers to join other cultural organisations.

- Publish a clear role description and monthly rota at least three weeks in advance.
- Provide short monthly training sessions on exhibitions and visitor service.
- Introduce a named weekend supervisor and a simple recognition scheme.

Although the programme offers a valuable introduction, clearer responsibilities and continuing support are required. If the recommendations above are implemented, the museum is likely to retain experienced volunteers and provide visitors with a more consistent service.
