The World's Quietest Room
In a laboratory in the United States, there is a room so quiet you can hear your own heartbeat. Known as an 'anechoic chamber', it absorbs almost all sound, means that no echo is ever produced. The walls, floor and ceiling are covered thousands of foam wedges that trap sound waves.
Most people cannot stay inside for long. With nothing to hear, the brain begins to notice the tiny sounds of the body, as the blood moving and the lungs breathing. Some visitors feel dizzy, others become anxious within minutes. In to test its limits, engineers use the room to measure exactly how much noise a product makes. It is the quietest place on Earth, and also one of the strangest.
