A2 Key (KET) Speaking – Practice Test 1 — Part 1 – Questions about you

3–4 minutes. Read the examiner's script and answer every question out loud — record yourself if you can. Then check the model answers and try the questions below.

Phase 1 — Personal information

Examiner: Good morning. Can I have your mark sheets, please? I'm the interlocutor and this is my colleague, the assessor.
Examiner (to A): What's your name?
Examiner (to B): And what's your name?
Examiner (to B): B, do you work or are you a student?
Examiner (to B): Where do you live?
Examiner (to A): A, do you work or are you a student?
Examiner (to A): Where do you live? Thank you.

Back-up prompts (if you don't understand): Do you study? Are you a student? Do you live in a big city?

Phase 2 — Topic 1: Food

Examiner: Now, let's talk about food.
A: What food do you like? (Back-up: Do you like pizza?)
A: Who cooks in your home? (Back-up: Does your family cook?)
B: Do you often eat in restaurants? (Back-up: Do you like restaurants?)
B: What did you have for breakfast today? (Back-up: Did you eat breakfast?)

Extended response — A: Now A, please tell me something about your favourite meal.

Phase 2 — Topic 2: Weekends

Examiner: Now, let's talk about weekends.
B: What do you usually do at the weekend? (Back-up: Do you go out at the weekend?)
B: Do you get up early on Sundays? (Back-up: Do you sleep late?)
A: Who do you spend your weekends with? (Back-up: Do you see your friends?)
A: What did you do last weekend? (Back-up: Did you stay at home?)

Extended response — B: Now B, please tell me something about a place you enjoy visiting at the weekend.

Model answers

  • What's your name? — "My name's Deniz."
  • Do you work or are you a student? — "I'm a student. I study engineering at university, and I'm in my second year."
  • Where do you live? — "I live in Izmir, a big city on the coast. I live there with my family."
  • What food do you like? — "I love Italian food, especially pasta, because it's quick and easy to cook."
  • Extended response (about 20–30 seconds): — "My favourite meal is breakfast at the weekend. My mother makes eggs and fresh bread, and we all sit together and talk. I like it because we're always busy in the week, so it's a nice time for the family."

Useful language

  • Giving a reason: because…, so…
  • Adding detail: especially…, for example…, like…
  • If you don't understand: Sorry, could you repeat that, please?
