In English, articles are short but very important words that come before nouns. They help us figure out if we're talking about something specific or not. There are two kinds of articles: definite and indefinite.

A / An: Indefinite Articles

We say "a" and "an" when we talk about something for the first time or when it isn't clear what it is.

• A is used in front of words that start with a consonant sound. For example: a book, a car, a college
• When a word starts with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u), you use an. For example, an apple, an hour, and an interesting story

Use “a/an” when:

• You mention something for the first time.→ I saw a cat in the garden.
• You talk about one of many.→ She is a teacher.
• You describe someone’s job.→ He is an engineer.

2. Definite Article: The

We use the when we talk about something that the speaker and listener already know or are talking about.

Example:

• I saw a cat. The cat was black. (Now we know which cat.)
• The sun is shining. (There is only one sun.)
• She plays the piano very well.

Use “the” when:

• There is only one thing. (the president, the moon)
• We have already talked about it.
• The person talking and the person listening both know what we're talking about.
• With superlatives. (the best, the most beautiful)
• Names of rivers, seas, oceans, mountain ranges, and newspapers, like the Amazon, the Alps, and the Times.

3. No Article (Ø)

We don't always put an article before nouns. This happens when we use general terms or uncountable or plural nouns that don't point to something specific.

Example:

• Cats are friendly animals. (in general)
• I love coffee. (not a specific coffee)
• Happiness is important.

Use no article when:

• In general, talking about things.
• Using nouns that are plural or uncountable in a general way.
• Talking about food, sports, and other things. I learn English. We play tennis. I ate lunch.
