Present Simple Tense / Present Continuous Tense

We use the Present Simple and Present Continuous tenses to talk about things that happen, habits, and situations. When you choose the right tense, you need to think about when the action happens and whether it is temporary or permanent.

Present Simple Tense (regular actions, facts – permanent or repeated)

We use Present Simple to talk about:

• Habits and routines
• General truths or facts
• Permanent situations

Form:

• Positive: subject + base verb (+s/es for he/she/it)
• Negative: subject + do/does not + base verb
• Question: Do/Does + subject + base verb?

Examples:

• I work in a bank. → (permanent job)
• She plays tennis every Saturday. → (habit/routine)
• Water boils at 100°C. → (fact)

Present Continuous Tense (temporary actions – happening now or around now)

We use Present Continuous to say:

• Things that are happening right now
• Situations that don’t last long
• Changing trends or situations
• Events that are planned for the future

Form:

• Positive: subject + am/is/are + verb-ing
• Negative: subject + am/is/are not + verb-ing
• Question: Am/Is/Are + subject + verb-ing?

Examples:
I am reading a book right now. → (happening at this moment)
She is studying for her exams this week. → (temporary situation)
They are moving to a new house next month. → (planned future)
