How to Write a Personal Profile – A1 English Writing Exercises

A personal profile is a short piece of writing where you introduce yourself and give some basic information about who you are. A personal profile in A1 English writing usually describes your appearance, personality, hobbies, likes and skills. It teaches you how to say things clearly and practice simple sentences. Beginners usually write personal profiles for school tasks, social websites or for English practice activities. Personal profiles often include descriptions of physical appearance, personality traits, hobbies and skills.

A good personal profile should be simple and structured. Write short sentences and simple words. Keep your writing in small sections so it is clear and easy to follow. Organizing ideas by topic helps novice writers to write better texts.

1. General information

Begin by introducing yourself. Write your name, age, where you live, or any simple information about your life.

Useful phrases:

  • My name is…
  • I am … years old.
  • I live in…
  • I am a student.
  • I come from…

Examples:

  • My name is Emma and I am 14 years old.
  • I live in London with my family.
  • I am a student at Green School.

2. Comment on your appearance

Describe your looks in simple adjectives. When we describe appearance, we often use be and have. Adjectives are usually “be” words and features like hair and eyes are usually “have” words.

Examples:

  • I have brown eyes.
  • I wear glasses.

Useful appearance words:

3. Tell me about your personality

Now tell us what kind of a person you are. The personality adjectives help your readers get to know your character. In beginner profiles personality is often described by simple adjectives with the verb ‘be’.

  • I am shy.
  • I am patient.
  • I am funny and helpful.

Useful personality adjectives:

  • friendly

You can also add words like:

  • very
  • quite
  • a little
  • really

Examples:

  • I am a little quiet.

4. Discuss hobbies and interests.

A personal profile usually contains things you enjoy doing. Express likes and dislikes using simple verbs. We use common verbs to express interests like like, love, hate and enjoy.

Useful structures:

  • I don’t like…

Examples:

  • I like reading books.
  • I enjoy playing football.

Remember: after enjoy, use a verb with -ing.
