When Amara accepted a job with a software company in Manchester, she was told she would never need to come to the office more than twice a month. For two years she stayed in the city anyway, because that was simply what people like her did. Then her landlord raised the rent again, and she began looking at maps. A colleague mentioned a village in the hills two hours north, where an old stone cottage was available. She signed the contract before she had even seen the roof properly. The first month was harder than she expected. In the city she had lived above a busy road for six years without learning a single neighbour's name. Within a week, three people had brought her vegetables from their gardens and one had fixed her front gate without being asked. She still works for the same company and still travels to Manchester twice a month. But she no longer describes the countryside as somewhere to escape to at the weekend. It is, she says, simply where she lives.
