Adverbs of Manner vs Adjectives (Quickly or Quick?)

Adjectives and adverbs of manner both describe things in English, but they do so in different parts of a sentence.

At the A1 level, you need to know when to say “quick” and when to say “quickly.”

Adjectives describe nouns

An adjective tells us more about a noun, which is a person, place, or thing.

It answers the question “What kind of…?”

Examples:

  • She is a quick runner. → (Quick describes runner.)
  • It’s a beautiful day.
  • He has a new car.

Form: adjective + noun

or be + adjective

She is happy. / The car is fast.

2. Adverbs of manner describe verbs

An adverb of manner tells you how something happens or how someone does something.

It answers the question “How?”

Examples:

  • She runs quickly. → (Quickly describes runs.)
  • He speaks slowly.
  • They work carefully.

Form: verb + adverb

He drives dangerously.

How to form adverbs

Most adverbs of manner are formed by adding -ly to the adjective.

Adjective→Adverb
quick→quickly
slow→slowly
careful→carefully
happy→happily

Note: Some adverbs are irregular and don’t end in -ly:

  • good → well
  • fast → fast
  • hard → hard

She is a good singer.

She sings well.

Common mistake

Incorrect: She runs quick.
Correct: She runs quickly. Incorrect: It’s a quickly car.
Correct: It’s a quick car.

Remember:

  • Use quick before a noun (adjective).
  • Use quickly after a verb (adverb).

Quick Practice

Choose the correct option:

  1. He speaks very (quick / quickly). → quickly
  2. She is a (beautiful / beautifully) singer. → beautiful
  3. They work (hard / hardly). → hard
