What would you do if an old map led you to a truth your town had hidden for years? The Mapmaker's Secret is an engaging mystery novel about courage, family and the stories places keep. The story follows sixteen-year-old Mara, who finds an unfinished map in her grandfather's workshop. 1 — choose —The map appears to show a tunnel that is missing from every modern plan.The author has written three cookbooks before this novel.Maps are usually printed on strong paper. As she investigates its unusual symbols, she discovers that several familiar buildings are connected to a forgotten rescue during a huge storm. Mara is curious and determined, but she sometimes acts before considering the consequences. 2 — choose —This weakness makes her believable and creates several tense moments.She is the oldest building in the town.The ending is written in the present tense. Her friendship with quiet, practical Leo creates a good balance, and their conversations sound natural rather than perfect. The novel explores memory, responsibility and the importance of telling the truth. 3 — choose —It asks whether protecting a comfortable lie can ever be the right choice.The chapters all have exactly the same length.The cover uses blue and silver lettering. The author also shows how one brave decision can influence a whole community many years later. Ward's writing is clear and visual. 4 — choose —Her descriptions of the coast make the wind, salt and darkness easy to imagine.Mara buys a new coat near the station.Mystery novels are sold in many countries. Although the opening chapters move slowly, the pace becomes much faster once Mara enters the abandoned lighthouse. 5 — choose —From that point, each short chapter ends with a new question or discovery.The lighthouse was built from grey stone in 1894.I normally read on the bus to work. I particularly enjoyed the clues hidden in ordinary objects. However, one of the villains was rather predictable, and I guessed his secret too early. 6 — choose —Even so, the final explanation included one clever surprise I had not expected.For this reason, the book contains no mystery at all.In addition, the pages have numbers. Overall, this is a gripping and thoughtful adventure with believable characters. 7 — choose —I would recommend it to readers who enjoy mysteries that focus on people as much as puzzles.The author should stop writing books immediately.It was published in a city with several libraries.
