Narrative Writing Step by Step - B1+ English Writing — Exercise 3
Write the correct narrative tense of each verb in brackets: past simple, past continuous, past perfect simple or past perfect continuous.
Last autumn, my cousin and I (hike) through a forest in northern Spain. We (walk) since sunrise when we (reach) an old stone shelter. Dark clouds were gathering, so we went inside.
While we (wait) for the rain to stop, I noticed a small metal box beneath a bench. Someone (hide) it under a loose floorboard. We opened it carefully and found photographs, letters and a notebook. The final page explained that a local teacher (leave) the box there forty years earlier for her former students.
We (decide) to take it to the nearest village. When we (arrive), an elderly woman recognised the teacher's name immediately. She (search) for those photographs for decades. As she looked through them, she smiled and then began to cry. By the time we left, the storm (pass), and the whole village was talking about the unexpected discovery.
