Adverbs of frequency with present simple
Adverbs of frequency tell us how often something happens. We use them with the Present Simple tense to talk about things we do all the time, like habits and routines.
Common Adverbs of Frequency
- always – 100% of the time
- usually – about 80%
- often – about 60–70%
- sometimes – about 40–50%
- rarely / seldom – about 10–20%
- never – 0%
Word Order Rules
- Before the main verb – Subject + adverb + verb
- I always eat breakfast.
- She usually walks to school.
- They never watch TV in the morning.
- After the verb “to be” (am / is / are) – Subject + be + adverb
- I am always happy.
- He is sometimes late.
- They are never tired.
Tips
- Don’t use adverbs of frequency with the Present Continuous. Incorrect: I am always playing football today. Correct: I always play football on Sundays.

- I often drink coffee in the morning.
- She never eats meat.
- We sometimes go to the cinema.
- He is usually on time for work.
