Another and Other Exercises

We use the words another, other, others, the other, and the others in English to talk about people or things that are different or extra. These words are very common at B1 level, but they can be hard to understand because they look and mean the same thing.

This guide tells you how to fill out each form correctly.

Another

Another means one more or a different one.

Structure

  • another + singular countable noun
  • another (alone, as a pronoun)

Examples

  • Can I have another coffee?
  • This one is broken. I’ll take another.

Other

We use “other” before a noun to talk about people or things that are different or extra.

Structure

  • other + plural noun
  • other + uncountable noun

Examples

  • I like these shoes, but I prefer the other ones.
  • Do you have other questions?
  • Some people prefer tea; other people prefer coffee.

Others

Other is a pronoun. It takes the place of other + plural noun.

Structure

  • others (no noun after it)

Examples

  • Some students finished early; others needed more time.
  • I don’t like these colours. I prefer the others.

❗Do not use a noun after others.

The Other

When we talk about the second of two or the last one in a group, we use the other.

Structure

  • the other + singular noun
  • the other (alone)

Examples

  • I have two keys. One is here, and the other is at home.
  • One shoe is black; the other shoe is brown.

The Others

We use the others to talk about the other people or things in a group we already know.

Structure

  • the others (no noun after it)
