Exercises & Summary
A(n), the, no article Exercises
In English, articles are small words that are very important. We use a/an, the, or no article to show whether something is general, specific, or already known. Knowing when to use each one will help you write and speak more clearly and naturally.
Using a / an (indefinite article)
When we talk about something for the first time or something that isn’t specific, we use an or an.
- Use a before consonant sounds:
- a car
- a teacher
- a book
- Use an before vowel sounds:
- an apple
- an hour
- an engineer
Examples:
- I saw a dog in the park. (not a specific dog)
- She is an architect.
- We need a new computer.
We often say a/an when we talk about:
- Jobs: He is a doctor.
- One example of something: This is a good idea.
- Something not known to the listener yet.
Using the (definite article)
We use the when we talk about something specific or something the person already knows.
Examples:
- The dog is in the garden. (we know which dog)
- Please close the door. (the specific door in this room)
- I liked the movie we watched yesterday.
We use the when:
- We mention something for the second time:
- I saw a dog. The dog was very friendly.
- There is only one:
- the sun
- the moon
- the internet
- It is clear which thing we mean:
- the teacher (in your class)
- the car (that we talked about)
Using no article (zero article)
We don’t always use an article. This is known as the zero article.
We don’t use an article with plural nouns when we talk about something in general:
- Dogs are friendly animals.
- Computers are useful.
- Teachers work hard.
(Not specific dogs or computers, but all of them in general.)
When we talk about uncountable nouns in general, we don’t use an article:
- Water is important.
- Information is useful.
- Money can cause problems.
We also don’t use an article with:
- Languages: She speaks English.
- School subjects: I study mathematics.
- Meals: We have lunch at 12.
- Countries and cities: He lives in Spain. / She lives in Istanbul.
General vs specific meaning
This is the most important difference:
General meaning (no article):
- I like coffee. (coffee in general)
- Dogs are intelligent. (all dogs)
Specific meaning (the):
- The coffee on the table is cold. (specific coffee)
- The dogs in my house are friendly. (specific dogs)
First mention and second mention
We often use a/an first and the later.
Example:
- I bought a book yesterday.
- The book is very interesting.
First time: a book (not specific yet)
Second time: the book (now it is specific)
