Pancake Day (British traditions)

Pancake Day is a popular celebration in the United Kingdom. It happens in February or March. It is always on a Tuesday. People also call this day Shrove Tuesday. It is the day before Lent starts.

In the past, many people did not eat sweet or rich food during Lent. So before Lent, families used eggs, milk, and sugar to make pancakes. They did not want to waste this food. Today, many people still eat pancakes on this special day.

Children and adults enjoy cooking pancakes at home. They often eat them with chocolate, jam, or fruit. Some people like them with sugar and lemon.

In some towns, there are pancake races. People run in the street and carry a frying pan with a pancake. They must throw the pancake in the air and catch it. If the pancake falls, they lose the race.

Pancake Day is not a public holiday, but many families celebrate it together in the evening. It is a fun and tasty tradition in Britain.
