A, some, any: Countable and uncountable nouns
We use a, some, and any to talk about amounts in English. The choice depends on whether the noun is countable or uncountable and whether the sentence is positive, negative, or a question.
1. Indefinite Article: A
When we talk about something for the first time, we use a with a single countable noun.
- Examples:
- I have a book.
- She bought a car.
Use “a” when:
- Talking about one item of a countable noun.
- Mentioning something for the first time.
2. Some
Some is used with:
- Plural countable nouns
- Uncountable nouns
Examples:
- I have some friends in London. (plural countable)
- I need some water. (uncountable)
Use “some” in:
- Affirmative sentences
- Offers or requests→ Would you like some tea?
3. Any
Any is used with:
- Plural countable nouns
- Uncountable nouns
Examples:

Use “any” in:
