A2 English Reading Test: Chinese New Year — Explanation

Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year, also called Lunar New Year or Spring Festival, is an important celebration for Chinese communities. Its date changes each year because it follows a lunar calendar. It usually begins between late January and the middle of February, and celebrations continue for about two weeks.

Before the festival, families clean their homes. This represents leaving old problems behind and welcoming a fresh start. Many people decorate doors and windows with red paper because red is connected with happiness and good luck. Shops and streets may also have red lanterns.

On New Year's Eve, relatives travel home for a large family dinner. Popular dishes are different across China. Families in the north often make dumplings together, while some southern families serve a whole fish. The food can express wishes for wealth, unity or a long life.

Children often receive money in red envelopes from older relatives. During public celebrations, people may watch lion or dragon dances and hear drums. Fireworks are common in some places, although some cities limit them for safety and cleaner air.

The final day is known as the Lantern Festival. Families look at colourful lanterns, eat sweet rice balls and spend time together. Chinese communities around the world celebrate too, so large events take place in cities from Singapore to San Francisco.
