A2 English Reading Test: Living in a Small Town vs a Big City — Explanation

Living in a Small Town vs a Big City

Last year, my family moved from a small town called Bellford to the big city of Brighton. In Bellford, everybody knew us. The streets were quiet, and I could walk to school in ten minutes. There was only one cinema, and it showed new films quite late.

Brighton is very different. Our flat is smaller than our old house, and we do not have a garden. However, there are many things to do. We can visit museums, concerts and different restaurants. My favourite place is the large library near the station.

My mother works at a hospital. In Bellford, she drove for forty minutes to work. Now she takes a bus and arrives in fifteen minutes. My father works from home, so his job has not changed.

At first, I did not like my new school. It was much bigger, and I did not know anyone. After a month, I joined the basketball club and made two good friends. We sometimes meet in the park after school.

The city is noisy and more expensive, and I miss our old garden. But I like having more activities and seeing my friends. My parents prefer the city because travelling to work and finding shops are easier.
