Linking words, which are also called connectors or conjunctions, help you connect thoughts and make your English sound more natural. You only need a few important ones at the A2 level. This guide shows you the best connectors and gives you simple rules and examples for how to use them.

1. Because – to give a reason

Use “because” to say why something happens.

Examples:

  • I am tired because I worked all day.
  • She stayed home because it was raining.
  • We need an umbrella because the weather is bad.

2. So – to show a result

Use “so” to talk about what happens next (the outcome).

Examples:

  • It was raining, so we stayed inside.
  • He was hungry, so he made a sandwich.
  • I don’t have money, so I can’t buy it.

3. Although / Though – to show contrast (surprise)

When something is different from what you thought, use “although.”

Examples:

  • Although it was cold, we went to the park.
  • She passed the test although she didn’t study much.
  • I like tea, although I usually drink coffee.

“Though” is the same as “although,” but it’s more casual, especially at the end: “It was cold, but we went out anyway.”

4. However – to show contrast (at the beginning of a sentence)

Use “however” when you want to show a different or opposite idea.

Examples:

  • I studied hard. However, the test was very difficult.
  • He is small. However, he plays basketball very well.
  • The hotel was expensive. However, it was worth it.

5. Time Connectors – to show when things happen

Common time connectors at A2 level:

  • When (the moment something happens)
  • Call me when you arrive.
  • I was cooking when the phone rang.
  • After (later than)
  • We will eat after the movie finishes.
  • After school, I do my homework.
  • Before (earlier than)
  • Brush your teeth before you go to bed.
  • I always have coffee before work.
  • As soon as (immediately after)
  • I will call you as soon as I get home.
  • As soon as it stops raining, we can play outside.
  • Until (up to a time)
  • Wait here until I come back.
  • She studied until midnight.
