Dear Help Page,

I live in a small flat with my wife and our young daughter. We moved here eight months ago. The street is quiet, the park is close and most of our neighbours are friendly. We are very happy here.

Our next-door neighbour is called Mrs Green. She is kind and often says hello to us. She also has a lovely cat called Pepper. Pepper usually stays in her garden, but he sometimes comes into ours.

Last week, Pepper started digging in the flower beds near our kitchen window. My wife planted new flowers there in spring. The cat has already broken three small plants. Yesterday, we also found dirty marks on the chair outside.

My daughter loves Pepper and enjoys playing with him. She does not want us to stop him coming into the garden. Mrs Green also loves her cat very much. I do not want to make her sad or start a problem between us.

I tried putting a small fence around the flowers, but Pepper jumped over it. My wife thinks I should speak to Mrs Green. I think she may feel that we do not like her cat. Should I tell her about the problem or try another fence?

I think you should talk to Mrs Green. Choose a time when you are both relaxed, perhaps at the weekend. Start by saying that your family likes Pepper. Then explain that he is damaging the new flowers.

Do not ask Mrs Green to keep Pepper inside all day. Cats often visit other gardens, and this may be difficult for her. Instead, ask if she has an idea. She may know what Pepper dislikes or when he usually goes outside.
