A2 English Reading Test: Should Kids Help with Household Chores? — Explanation
Should Kids Help with Household Chores?
Families have different ideas about children and housework. Some parents do every job because children have school and need time to play. Other parents believe that small chores are an important part of family life.
Young children can put toys away, place spoons on the table or put dirty clothes in a basket. Older children can make simple food, wash dishes or help with laundry. The job must be safe and right for the child's age.
Children do not always know how to complete a new task. An adult should show each step and do the job with them at first. It is better to give clear instructions than to become angry about mistakes.
Chores can teach useful skills. Children learn that clean clothes and meals need work. They can also become more independent and learn to plan homework, activities and housework.
However, children should not do all the housework. They need enough time for sleep, school, friends and play. A short list of regular jobs is usually better than many surprise jobs. Families can talk about the plan and change it when school is very busy.
